The Future of War is today

By Idris Azim

15th December 2020

A single red eye tracks the night sky, it’s turret slowly rotating back and forth. A surge of activity causes it to snap to attention; a single rocket flying towards the base which the machine is tasked to protect. Alarms go off, men scatter. They are under attack. The red eye makes a near-instantaneous calculation of the rocket’s trajectory, then it makes a decision. A stream of red from thousands of bullets fill the night sky, every 4th bullet being a bright red tracer round. A rocket travelling at 300 meters a second is quite literally shot out of the sky, and many more are intercepted by the same machine throughout the same night.  This is not science fiction. This is reality.

The fault in our waters

By Idris Azim

6th October 2020

On the 3rd of September 2020, the entire Klang Valley, from Shah Alam to Kuala Lumpur had experienced an unscheduled disruption in their water supply from Sep 3, affecting about 1.2 million consumers. The disruption was caused by the closure of Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2 and 3 as well as Rantau Panjang water treatment plants, due to pollution at the plants' raw water source. The pollution in Sungai Selangor was traced to a machinery maintenance factory in Rawang, resulting in its closure and the arrest of four men who would be later detained and investigated Section 430 of the Penal Code. How much did this cost the government and businesses? Who was responsible, and what happened to them? How can we prevent this from happening again?

✨ Culture Shock ✨

By X.Y.

31st August 2020
When I was younger, I used to visualise ‘the West’ to be this charming magical place where people were accepting of all kinds of culture, less conservative with ‘taboo’ topics (i.e sex education and LGBTQ+ discussions) and a place where all aspects of equality were advocated for and practiced. Unbeknownst to me, I had been influenced to believe that these were the things the West stood for and what Malaysia could do better in. College [the school I took my A-Levels in] definitively shattered this illusion: instead, I was thrusted into this small, conservative community of less than 10,000 people.

On Nation Building

30th January 2020

By Vikneswaran

Nation building is very much intertwined with how politics is being done in Malaysia. There are so many problems which can be discussed that can lead to change. And we can all agree that for any change to occur, an initial trigger is required. A movement, for a change. In this article, I am going to address the issue of how current youths are not being the front runners for new movements of change, because we are so focused on our own lives that we fail to see how our country, Malaysia, is actually part of our lives too.

Crisis

By Calvin Tan Kee Wei

Amidst the cacophony of mugs clinking, orders being relayed (read: shouted) across the tumultuous waves of patrons enjoying their roti or maggi goreng, my friend told me something shocking over her teh tarik. She wasn’t coming back. That is, she was currently in her sophomore year in Canada, and saw no reason in returning to Malaysia after her graduation. Her conviction seemed strangely firm, which I couldn’t comprehend because she seemed so comfortable wallowing here in the essence of Malaysia - the mamak. After some prodding, she told me that there were more opportunities for her overseas. She had ample ways to make use of her degree; or do something unrelated at all for less effort. The dissatisfaction in her voice betrayed her cheery demeanor when it came to talking about her future in Malaysia (or a lack thereof). Her sentiments aren’t uncommon and speaks to a larger problem plaguing the country’s youth - the crisis of brain drain.
